Whoa. Just whoa. I discovered Life As We Knew It via this review at Pixie Kids Stix Pix, where we readers are implored to “Go get this book!” So I did. I ordered it from amazon. It came Wednesday night. I started it yesterday morning and finished it in bed last night. I devoured this book. This can be hard to do while taking care of a baby–we spent a lot of the day in T’s “safe” room, where he can crawl about and explore as he pleases.
Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer is an end-of-the-world book. It’s a little bit The Stand and a lot How I Live Now (both of which I love!). In Life as We Knew It, an asteroid hits the moon and knocks it out of its orbit. Suddenly, the world is different. Tides are bigger, new volcanos erupt, the climate changes. No electricity, gasoline, nada. I mean, really, what would we all do without electricity?
Pixie Stix Kids describes this book as “compelling.” I heartily agree! I couldn’t stop reading about Miranda and her family. This is not the story of the world. It’s the story of one high school girl and her family as they struggle to survive without modern comforts, literally worried that they will not have food to live.
Of course, as I read I kept thinking, “What if this really happened?” I thought about it all day. I thought about it as I took my baby for a 15-minute-drive, just to get him to sleep. I thought about it when my husband came home from work yesterday afternoon, with a few bags from the grocery store.
I read a lot of great books. I do. But Life As We Knew is my personal “most compulsively read so far this year” book. Highly recommended. Like Pixie Stix Kids, I say “Go get this book!”

So glad you liked this book! It is one of my favorites, and I thought about it a lot after I read it. I also read it in a day (well, a night really), and had a hard time pulling myself out of the reality of the book when I put it down.
